This past weekend I attended the Northern Wisconsin State Fair. And, it is fair time that gets me thinking the heating season is not far away. It is time to start looking for good deals on pellets. Not surprisingly, the price is up this year. There was only one exhibitor at the entire fair this year, a change from last year when there were several.

There are 50 bags of pellets per ton and many places quote prices in tons not bags. So, for instance a price of $280/ton or $5.60 per bag. …a little on the spendy side. At the fair, I was quoted $4.80 a bag or $240 a ton. About a dollar sixty five more than what I paid last year.

Now the problem comes when you ask the question, “Why is it more than last year?” and I was told “it is all due to the increased transportation cost” Ok, wait a minute. Lets do some quick math, shall we? If we take $1.67 * 1400 bags (how many are in a semi load) we get $2338. Am I being told that it is costing an extra twenty three hundred dollars to drive a load of pellets from Marathon WI? Hummm. I am not so sure. What we have is some profit taking here. Which is fine, but lets not blame it all on the cost of fuel.
